Bangkok, Thailand

December 24-28, 2019

We saw dozens of wats on our vacation. These are some of my favorites.

Wat Chakrawat, also known as the Crocodile Temple, is on the edge of Bangkok's Chinatown. Legend has is that several hundred years ago, a fearsome one-eyed croc came over from the nearby Chao Praya River and ate a bad monk. From that day on, the temple kept crocodiles on site to weed out any other bad monks and make sure there are only good ones present. (A little bit of research calls into question this story, but I still love thinking about it.)

In Chiang Mai, the Old City was filled with wats, all unique and beautiful. At one, I had a fun exchange with a monk about the coconuts, his goldfish and tapping the trees. Neither of us understood what the other was saying, but it was rather enjoyable.

And near the end of our time in Thailand, we returned to the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, which was a busy place despite the hour. I remembered the birds from our last visit, but forgot the dancers. I especially love the photos of two of the dancers looking at their iPhones during their break.
