Wahpeton, North Dakota

August 24, 2014

Just over the Minneapolis-North Dakota border is the town of Wahpeton. It's located where the Bios de Sioux and Otter Tail River merge to become the Red River and it is state number 46 on my list.

Fun fact: It's also home to the only golf course that has half the course in one state and half in another.

The Indians who lived here called it Chahinkapa, "the end of the woods" but when the St. Paul and Pacific railroad arrived in the late 1870s, it became a thriving town for trade using flatboats that took north to Canada.

Wait, the river flows north? Yes, this is above the north-south continental divide. This will become important later in the day.

For now, we drove through a cute downtown and then out to the park to spend a few minutes with a giant catfish.
