Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

August 11, 2010

Martha's Vineyard wasn't on the original itinerary, but the lure of an afternoon on the water and exploring the seaside town was too much to resist.

While trying to find parking, I got frustrated, backed into a driveway and hit a pole. Ugh. We checked out the damage on the back bumper and it was noticeable, but not terrible. I worried for the rest of the trip that returning the rental car would be a nightmare, but they didn't say a thing. Sue's cousin later told told me, "If you return it to a New York airport (which we did), they just assume everyone gets a dent or scrape just from being in the city."

I recovered from my driving mistake and we continued on with our day. The ferry from Woods Hole to the island was filled with residents who, sadly, didn't invite us to spend the rest of the week in their Cape Cod beach homes. We toyed with the idea of renting mopeds, but after being warned about all the 'rush-hour traffic' we would encounter (really? on Martha's Vineyard?), we ended up walking on the beach instead, enjoying the sunshine and doing a little shopping.
