Honalua Bay, Maui
June 25, 2013
Each morning, we went
snorkeling at a different beach. Our favorite was the area
nicknamed Turtle Town at the southern end of the island.
Today, we headed to the north end of the
island. Honalua Bay is a marine preserve, but
unfortunately it had rained the night before and the snorkeling
was not as amazing as described in the reviews we had read.
Still, we had a pretty good time. The more memorable moments of the outing
however were seeing Uncle Jimmy, the nearby landowner who guards
the parking lot and depending on his mood that day, makes you
feel welcome or makes you feel like the tacky tourist. He pretty
much left us alone, so I guess we're someone in the middle of
that range. To get to the beach, you walk in through a
huge grove of Banyan trees and it's and very picturesque! There
are free roaming chickens too, several of which Katie
befriended. The one bit of wildlife that was most unwelcome was
the bee who gave Lisa her first (and hopefully) last bee sting.
