Helen, Georgia

August 28, 2006

About 25 years ago, Helen was a small, dying logging town in northeast Georgia. To save their tiny town, residents came up with the concept to recreate an alpine village, complete with Bavarian facades on the buildings and narrow cobblestone alleys to explore. We were told the place is packed in the summer, on weekends, and especially for Oktoberfest. But on a Monday morning in late August, the other tourists were mostly gone and we had the downtown square pretty much to ourselves.
