Los Angeles, California

April 26, 2008

Starting in the 1930's, this open-air market at the corner of 3rd Street and Fairfax became a local institution. We used to go there occasionally to eat and shop. The market includes dozens of gift stores, food stalls and counter-order restaurants, plus the landmark 1941 Clock Tower.

In 2002, an expansion called The Grove opened next door - a highly conceptualized outdoor mall with cobblestones, marble mosaics, and pavilions. When we arrived today, it was bulging with shoppers and tourists. Los Angeles history gets a nod too with the electric trolley, which shuttles two blocks through the Farmers Market and The Grove.
