We logged a lot of miles today, and it was all worth it to see the World's Only Corn Palace!

"With its mad mix of onion domes and min
arets, it looks like it was drop-kicked out of czarist Russia."

(Is that the best description of a building you've ever heard? Wish I'd written it.)

The Palace is redecorated each year with colored corn and other grains and native grasses. It's all grown by one farmer, who I assume either has a great sense of humor or is a total hard-ass.

Each ear is nailed to the Corn Palace to create a scene. Some of this years' murals are finished but the front sections are still blank. And the whole building exterior is being renovated so some of the more distinguishing characteristics at the top are missing (Photo of the pre-construction building is at the bottom.) Still, it's pretty interesting.

Inside there's a big auditorium/ basketball court/meeting space. The night we were there, Tommy James and the Shandells were performing. We didn't go to the concert, but they let us wander around inside beforehand.

Oh, and the local high school team mascot is the Mitchell Kernels.

Not surprisingly, there's corn for as far as the eye can see driving into town and, in just about every town along the highway, a place where you can score a great Midwestern milkshake.
