"The Cicadas are Coming to the Washington DC Area in May 2004!" warned the travel website.

"Remember this when making outdoor plans this spring. You may want to postpone family barbecues and move some events indoors to avoid billions of buzzing cicadas."

Fascinating. Cicadas, we soon found out, only emerge from underground every 17 years for about a month. The start of this infestation coincided with our trip. They are large insects, about an inch and a half long, with black bodies, red eyes and wings. And they are loud -- as loud as a gas-powered lawnmower we were told. We saw and heard hundreds of them, including these on the wall of our hotel parking lot.
