I served on the Cabana Club Board of Directors for nearly 20 years. The club was in pretty sad shape in the beginning of my tenure, the result of an aging population in our neighborhood and declining membership. I remember our then-president once had to pay the property taxes on his personal credit card because there was not enough money in the bank account.

But each year, we made some progress. Membership started to rebound as newer families moved into the area and with some new marketing tools to let people know about the club and its services. I helped by creating an email address, a website, a new phone number (575-POOL), an online membership portal with credit card payments, a newsletter and eventually a staff scheduling system. We also ran a successful swim lesson program that generated a lot of revenue (and many years' worth of summer jobs for my kids). With the improved cash flow, we could finally make many improvements to the club and pool, and even start holding special events like pizza parties, smore's outings and movie nights.

A couple of us were longtime board members, while many others served for a year or two. We didn't always agree, but it was a good group and I learned a lot from these people.
