Memphis, Tennessee

March 8, 2014

We packed a lot of sightseeing into one morning, thanks to a nearly deserted downtown, a great breakfast spot, and the trolley that made a loop through the center of town and then back down along the banks of the Mississippi.

We lucked out on the trolley by sitting next to a local family who pointed out many of the landmarks and told us lots of interesting stories. He told us that the pyramid building, which used to be a sports arena but has been empty for years, is being converted into the largest Bass Pro Shop store. You'll not only be able to shop to your hearts' content or dine at the food court inside, but also test drive boats in the Mississippi River. He pointed out Cybil Shepard's home on the bluff overlooking the River. He warned us that the city was about to get very crowded and crazy (in a good way) with the final Memphis Tigers basketball game of the season start. And told us where the best Memphis BBQ is served.

From there, we drove over the river to the state of Arkansas (number 40 on my list) and then made an about face and headed southeast to our next destination.
