Downey, California

December 15, 2016

This was the pitch: On Saturday night, a wide-grinning, bespectacled hipster dressed in day-glo retrowear will switch on holiday lights wrapped around a space capsule while scores of people swap donuts.

Interstellar madness? Nope. It was a down to earth, low-key and fun event. A chance to hear local historian-humorist Charles Phoenix talk about the 1960s in Southern California. Downey was home to one of NASA’s largest production facilities in the early days of the space program and much of that history is on display in their Space Center and outdoor displays. Then, as the sun set, a group of enthusiasts gathered around the decorated Apollo capsule for the lighting ceremony.

And did I mention free donuts?
