Grandma's Journey More Photo Album Home
Southwest Terminal, Burbank Airport
February 27, 2001
One of the more interesting parts of Grandma's final journey from Long Beach to northern California was this elevator lift which carried her from the tarmac up to the cabin of the airplane at Burbank Airport. Though the trip was a grueling one for Grandma, she nonetheless had her bright moments. Leaving Long Beach via Shoreline Drive, she shared stories about the grand arrival of the Queen Mary in the 1960s, and then promptly chastised city officials for their wasteful spending practices on that and other tourist attractions. While waiting in the airport terminal, she and Danny shared a hot dog. "This is the BEST hot dog I've ever had!" she told him. In flight, she snacked on roasted peanuts and enjoyed a great view of the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas. Ever fashion conscious, she also made a point of calling over a 20-something passenger to compliment her for donning such a "smart outfit." Danny told me afterwards the trip was harder than he had expected, and I agreed. Still, we were both glad we did it. It was the last time we saw Grandma. She died one week later. |
