Across from the State Capitol, in the middle of new office complex, is the Golden State 2003 Zone of Discovery. Placed at seemingly random points in plaza are sculptural elements inscribed with images and text. They tell a history of gold as understood by science, politics, and religions. In actuality, the placement is a mirror image of the position of the stars and planets as they were on September 9, 1850, the date California became a state.

At the end of the space is an "excavation," the surfaces and sides of which hold an image that can be viewed only when looked at from a perfectly straight alignment between the site and the Capitol.
