After a meeting at the LA County Fair, we stopped at the Millard Sheets Gallery, an exhibit space on the fairgrounds that is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. The gallery is in this historic Fine Arts building which was built under the WPA in 1937. Later, the building was renamed in honor of artist Millard Sheets, a Pomona native who was the director of the fair's art programs until the mid-1950s. (I wonder if he ever applied his artistic skills to the melting candle centerpieces at the Taco Kitchen, a family favorite in nearby LaVerne until it closed down in 1970?)
