January 3: Inauguration Day.

In keeping with the grim fiscal times and low-key nature of the day, one of the main events was a union-sponsored lunch of hot dogs and chips on the lawn outside the Capitol.  I walked into a large tent next to the food lines and staked out a place where I could see the new Governor speak to his supporters. People had been waiting about an hour to see him and were getting tired (so was the mariachi band.)

Finally the Governor came out of the Capitol.  He walked over to the hot dog line, said a few words to the servers, took a couple of bites and then went right back into the Capitol.  No pep talk, no smooth talking, just back to business.  A glimpse of how things had changed overnight at th Capitol and a preview of a no nonsense tact for the rough road ahead.
