Sacramento, California

With rapidly rising Sacramento River levels due to recent rains, our department decided to take the fairly rare action of opening 20 gates of the Sacramento Weir this morning. The 1,920 foot long weir is a manually-operated flood control structure that acts as a release valve to take water from the River and send it into the Yolo Bypass forsafe passage to the Delta.

(Later, at a New Year's Eve party, our friend Sharon told us her grandfather helped build the weir in 1916.)
