Rio Vista, California

November 3, 2010

I took the day off and went down to watch the 10-story Rio Vista Tower move across the Sacramento River to the Delta Discovery Center site.  The tower dates back to 1904 when it was used by canning and packing company. It was connected to a well that pumped water into the upper and lower tanks. The top part was used to flow the asparagus through the canary on a flume. The bottom part was used for drinking water and other water needs.

In the mid-1960's, the tower sprang a considerable number of leaks that were too expensive to fix. Two years ago, the owner donated it to the Discover the Delta Foundation to use as a future landmark.

To move the tower, the largest crane barge working on the San Francisco Bay Bridge project was brought up the Sacramento River.  PG&E had to shut down powerlines and Caltrans closed a road -- both in case something were to happen when the crane lifted the sections of the tower from the area they've been sitting for years onto the barge.

Once on the barge, they had to move quickly to make sure they didn't lose the high tide before they got under the bridge and deposited the tower onto the levee road on the other side of the river.
