Haleakala National Park Summit, Maui

June 23, 2013

I'll bet there's nowhere else on Earth you drive from sea level to 10,023 feet in only 38 miles. And in that short vertical ascent to the summit of the volcano Haleakala you journey from lush, tropical-island landscape to the stark, moonlike basin of the volcano's enormous, otherworldly crater.

We drove up in the afternoon, which was a good thing because I never could have survived that winding, steep drive before sunrise. Lisa was a good sport as I had several panic attacks as our car hugged the edge of the road.

But once we arrived, it was worth it. Totally lived up to the hype. Absolutely breathtaking.
