Carcross Desert, Yukon Territory

August 29, 2012

A desert? Well, it turns out, not exactly. Carcross Desert is actually a series of northern sand dunes. The area's climate is too humid to be considered a true desert. The sand was formed during the last ice age when large glacial lakes from and deposited silt. When the lakes dried, the dunes were left behind. Today, sand comes mainly from some of the nearby southern lakes, carried by wind.

As we got out of the car, Katie got this wild look in her eyes and I had a flashback to Zion where Katie disappeared up the mountain on the Carmel Highway. While the rest of our were looking around, Katie headed straight for the mountain. Before I knew it, she was a hundred yards away and I freaked. She came back down, none too happy, but then Mom and Jerry talked me into letting her climb to the top. Which she did.
