The local SPCA does a one-week day camp each summer and Katie got one of the coveted slots in this year's program.

For five days, the kids learn about the SPCA programs, animal care, feeding and cleaning, and even got to watch surgery on a dog. This week, the SPCA was in the local news when they took in more than 100 chihuahuas who were confiscated by police from a local hoarder. Finding room for that many dogs was quite a challenge, but Katie and her friends got to be part of that project.

Of course, there was the inevitable question, "Can we get another cat?" and I must say it was hard to turn down the offer to bring home adorable Davey Jones, a one-eyed kitten. But my resolve was strong and we ended the week with great lessons in animal care....and no new critters at our house.
