Palisade State Park, South Dakota

August 25, 2014

This is where Jesse James made his infamous Outlaw Leap after he robbed a bank in Minnesota, and then hid out in a cave in nearby Split Rock Creek. When Jesse thought he could flee the area, he was surprised to find a posse of lawmen waiting for him. A chase ensued, ending at the precipice of Devil’s Gulch Peak. Here, Jesse supposedly spurred his horse on, and leapt across the canyon to Palisades State Park.

We didn't leap off any cliffs today, but Lisa and Katie did climb some rocks and we spent a great morning here. It's much more beautiful than these photos show, with uniqe terrain of tall Sioux quartzite spires, a pretty river, and loads of hiking trails.
