When I was an unpaid intern living in Washington years ago, the
after-work cocktail reception was the place we all went to eat and meet
during the work week. It was the days before email and cell phones, so
all the arrangements were made with numerous phone calls to our offices
each afternoon. I'm sure it was very annoying to the career
professionals we worked with. Today's interns are no doubt more
