Long Beach, California
1972
The Queen Mary retired from ocean travel in 1967 and was permanently
docked in Long Beach to be a hotel and maritime museum. I recall Grandma
and Grandpa, who were active in the community, were on a boat filled
with city officials that welcomed the ship into the harbor. It was very exciting, although I remember years later Grandma telling me that they both thought it was a ridiulous waste of money for the city. Still, not so ridiculous that we didn't go visit in 1972, after it re-opened to the public. |
