The governor visited our offices today to talk about the drought and climate change. I lucked out and got to help with the preparations for his visit, including waiting with him and his staff in the party room (yes, that's what this utility room in our building is apparently called.)

As our board meeting started, I shuttled back and forth between the two rooms to make sure the timing of the governor's entrance came at the right moment. After getting the nod, I went back to let his staff know the board was ready for the governor.

I entered the room and the governor was in the middle of a discussion with the others in the room. Politely waiting for a break in the talk so I could let them all know we were ready, I was startled when the governor looked at me and asked, "Do YOU know?"

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"Do you know what Opes Dei is?" he repeated.

It sounds like something out of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, but rather than risk making a fool, I simply said,
"Sorry Governor, I was raised a good Protestant."
