Although we don't get to Grandma Agnes' house very often, our visits at Christmas time have made for some pretty special memories fo the kids.

Danny and Lisa remember the cellar at the house -- it's a real old fashioned celler with large wooden doors that open up from the ground, leading to narrow stairs and a dark musty room with a single hanging lightbulb to illuminate the shelves filled with jars of peaches, jams, beans, pickles and vegetables.

One year, a shelf was filled with olives and Agnes told us how she made them, bathing the freshly picked olives in lye. We had to wonder who came up with the idea to soak olives in poison and then who was the first person to say, "hey, I'll try one..."

For many years, Agnes had a walk-in bird house in the back with hundreds of canaries and finches she cared for. That was always fun to see.

Now, the birds are gone -- too much work for her. But this year, in addition to the one or two dogs she usually has, a new treat: four Pekinese pups who couldn't get enough of Katie. And vice versa.
