Pasadena and Antelope Valley, California

1970-1973

We were some of the coolest kids in our friends groups after mom and dad started buying us motorbikes in the early 1970s. Sometimes we would ride them on the streets in our neighborhood, but on many weekends, we took them out to the desert to ride. One place I remember was an abandoned housing subdivision site with paved roads, dirt roads and lots of pads for the never-built houses.

I didn't realize until years later that the motorcycles weren't bought simply for our recreation. Mom and Dad had an alterior motive. "We bought them to keep you from taking drugs," they eventually told us. I'm not sure it made any difference, but it sure made for some great family adventures.
