Midtown Block Party More Photo Album Home
Sacramento, California
July 4, 2008
We went to a couple
of Fourth of July block parties tonight, including this one in midtown with
Lisa's friends. The eclectic neighborhood has craftsman, Victorian
and mid-century homes and apartments. And, as I learned from the president of the homeowners
association, it's called the Newton Booth neighborhood.
Booth served as governor in the 1870s and apparently enjoyed stirring up trouble. While in office, he was also elected to the U.S. Senate, and served concurrently in both offices for 18 months. No surprise that controversial move prompted his opponents to change the state constitution to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. A bachelor while in office, Booth married at age 68, then died five months later. Considered one of the great public speakers of his day, he died of cancer of the tongue. Draw your own conclusions. But tonight was not about politics or history, but about enjoying a warm summer night with friends, fireworks and silly string.
