St. Patrick's Cathedral
New York City, New York
November 9, 2001
I'm
not in the habit of going to funerals for people I've never met, but Lisa and I
attended the memorial service of FDNY lieutenant Vinnie Halloran from Ladder 8,
who was killed when the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed on
September 11, 2001. The cathedral was packed with family members and friends, hundreds of firefighters, city officials including Mayor Guiliani, and at least two strangers from California who just wanted to be there -- to put a human face on the tragedy. I surprised myself by weeping throughout the service. Especially when I read that he had left a wife, five young boys and one more child on the way. And when I read that he was born in the same month and same year as I was. And as we listened to the stories of his crazy antics, practical jokes, compassion for others and his final act of bravery. |
