The cathedral was packed with family members and friends, hundreds of firefighters, city officials including Mayor Guiliani, and at least two strangers from California who just wanted to be there -- to put a human face on the tragedy. I surprised myself by weeping throughout the service. Especially when I read that he had left a wife, five young boys and one more child on the way. And when I read that he was born in the same month and same year as I was. And as we listened to the stories of his crazy antics, practical jokes, compassion for others and his final act of bravery.
