Crescent City, California

August 10, 2007

In the 1850s, Crescent City was a hub of lumber shipping.  Ships loaded with precious lumber for the rapidly growing city of San Francisco were in constant danger as they sailed along this rocky coast. To help protect them, the Battery Point lighthouse was built. A century later, an Alaskan earthquake sent a large tidal wave this way. The lighthouse was spared. Crescent City was not quite so lucky, with 29 city blocks destroyed.

It's only accessible at low-tide, but fortunately we arrived at the right time and were able to head up the hill to take a look.
