Kootenai Falls was one of those unexpected treats that come with road trips.

From the parking lot, a forest trail lead us from the road down to the largest free-flowing waterfall in the northwest. The other direction on the trail took us to a
swinging bridge originally built during the Great Depression by the CCC.

From there, it was just a couple of hours drive to Sandpointe, where we met up with Jill who was one of my roommates during my internship in Washington DC in 1981.

Jill is now a forest hydrologist and lives in northern Idaho. Our visit with her was great but too short, so we're already planning a return trip.
