I love the part of traveling when the slightest, unplanned detour affords the best meal of the trip, a fun afternoon of exploring and shopping, beautiful scenery, and of course, yummy sweets.

After landing at the airport in Minneapolis, we crossed the St. Croix River into Wisconsin. It's a state that Lisa and Katie hadn't visited so worth the short drive for that reason alone. But there, we found a charming historic downtown filled with restaurants, shops, and a rich arts scene.

After lunch, we wandered around, stopping at a gift store with the best name ever, "Dilly Dally in the Alley" and then to a chocolate shop next door that Lisa had read about.

Handmade truffles are made on site and seduced our taste buds. We also tried the sea salted caramels, ice cream, and a few other treats. At the register, we joked to the cashier that we had come 'all the way from California to try their chocolates.' She grabbed a stack of their gourmet chocolate bars from under the counter and tossed them into our bag at no extra cost. "It's my last day," she told us. "So, what the hell..."
