Ground Zero More Photo Album Home
New York City, New York
November 8, 2001
Driving to the
southern tip of Manhattan, it's impossible not to feel that something is
different. Police on every corner, concrete barricades, signs plastered on
light posts pleading for news about still-MISSING friends, and tourists pointing to an empty spot in the sky. As we navigate the New York City streets on the road map, we see that we are nearing the World Trade Center complex, and get a little nervous knowing there's tremendous destruction lurking just around the corner. But when we find a free one-hour parking spot on a tree lined block in Battery Park with a view of the waterfront, and start walking with the kids on a beautiful Fall day, you think to yourself, "Maybe they are wrong. Maybe nothing bad happened here after all." But then you see IT. And know that you're standing at the place where our world changed less than two months earlier. Lisa brought a card her class made for the firefighters proclaiming, "Thank you for saving New York." As we were standing at the threshold of Ground Zero, a firefighter walked past us. Lisa rushed up to him, handed him the card. The firefighter seemed to be in no mood for smiles and a photo op, but stood with Lisa next to his car, and quietly told her that he was heading back to the station and would give his men the card. He handed Lisa some candies and then got into the car and started to drive away. But then he stopped, and called out to Lisa. When she went to his car, he handed her a FDNY patch as a keepsake and thanked her again. I'd like to think it was a bright spot in his day. It was for us... |
