Monte Rio, California

April 19, 2008

The trip down memory lane started with packages of Fizzies that Jerry bought on an Internet side offering  retro food items to nostalgic baby boomers. These drink tablets were a summertime treat for us on Vista Lane (although they never tasted as good as I wished they would.)

Meanwhile, Ellie interviewed Nana and Bobo about life during World War II.  Marge disappeared for a few minutes and returned with her family's war rations books. She talked about the thrill of getting an extra pair of shoes when one of her younger siblings was born, but didn't need shoes yet.  Since gas was a scarcity, Dad explained, they did a lot of walking and bike riding to get around. Why are there so many unused coffee coupons, someone asked? Well, they didn't drink coffee, Nana explained.  But why didn't you trade it for something you did need? Apparently barter didn't fit into the Sawyer family's version of patriotic spirit.

The following morning, the girls corralled Nana into showing some of her family movies.
