St. Joseph, Missouri

August 26, 2014

When we first arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri, we got off the freeway in a rough part of town and I gave serious thought to abandoning our plans to spend the night here.

But we ultimately decided to stick it out and I'm really glad we did. We were guests in a lovely home (on the other side of town) with a nice couple and their huge adorable dog, Turner.

After dinner, Jean gave us the grand tour of the town, and told us stories about the history of St. Joseph, which was the starting point of the Pony Express and the jumping off point for the Oregon Trail, the place where Jesse James met his maker, and drove us past some beautiful homes in the Hall Street Historic District.

She also showed us the city's newest source of pride: a huge mural
depicting the city’s role in western migration that is painted on six adjoining buildings downtown.
