Tianjin, China

A century and a half ago, the story goes, the Goubuli Baozi restaurant in Tianjin was in a fierce competition with the restaurant next door.  Both shops specialized in steamed buns stuffed with pork and spices. Residents of the town picked their favorite place and it was a very spirited rivalry. Then one day, Empress Cixi sent word from Peking that she wanted the goubuli from the Boazi restaurant. Talk about a marketing advantage.

The other restaurant is still there -- next door in fact -- and has built a most interesting European-style facade to lure people in. But I'm guessing they never quite recovered from being passed over by the royal family.

The local water agency invited me to lunch at the restaurant and we sat in a beautiful private room upstairs. The centerpiece was filled with locally-made figurines, which looked like porcelain but are made of mud and painted. Of course, we had the legendary dumplings which looked like perfectly formed chrysanthemum buds, as well as a deep fried fish (the meat inside was delicious) and many other dishes. About halfway thru the meal, a young man came into the room and sang for us.
