Marysville, California

February 25, 2012

Marysville boasts the oldest continuous Chinese new year parade in the country, having started 131 years ago during the Gold Rush. The parade and the festival honor Bok Eye, god of the North and the Chinese god of water whose powers have prevented Marysville from being flooded when surrounding communities have sustained near-ruinous flooding as recently as 1997. Bok Eye's powers include overseeing waterways, water systems, irrigation and rain. (Hmmm....that sounds familiar.)

The highlight of the parade was the 175-foot flanked by the gongs, drums, cymbals of Chinese music and the relentless popping of firecrackers.
