Since we couldn't decide where to have dinner, we went for a walk along the Deschutes River in downtown Bend.

Katie befriended a family that was catching crawdads. They had a trap, but had the most success hand-catching the creatures while hanging from trees or the dock. They put bait -- a fish spine -- in the shallow water and waited for the crawdads to crawl
up from the bottom of the river.

We hung out for about an hour, during which time they caught most of the 75 crawdads they needed to make a stew of fish, corn, beans and hot sauce.
