One of the highlights of my professional
side of life each year is my annual trip to the Governor and
First Lady's Conference for Woman. It's always an inspiring and enjoyable event - and this year's gathering of 11,000 women was no exception. Sandra Day O'Connor was one of the keynote speakers who shared her insight and humor, including a story about the only job offer she received after graduating third in her class from Stanford Law School -- an offer to be a legal secretary, but only "if she could improve her typing skills a bit." Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life was inspiring. When he found out I was a speechwriter, he asked for my business card and then we ended up talking about the Russian River, where he had worked for a while before becoming a pastor. Mostly, the speakers challenged us to 'find our voice' and be bold. I didn't notice it at the time - but I think that's just what the woman in the bottom left photograph was doing when she was going at it with Jane Fonda during a book signing.. |
