Victoria B.C., Canada

August 30, 2012

Alix, Andrea, and Mike met us as we walked off the ship and whisked us away to a fabulous evening in Victoria. I had mistakenly thought that our foreign port stop on the last night of the cruise was in Vancouver, just down the street from where they live. But even when it turned out to be Victoria, a 90-minute ferry ride away, they never hesitated and it was so great to see them all.

We strolled around the Empress hotel, had dinner down by the waterfront, and then walked around downtown until it was time to go back to the ship.

As we were walking through security to board, the guy asked us if we wanted to get our passports stamped? We did, and he directed us back into the building. A sassy (there's no other word to describe her) customs agent said sternly that we would need to answer a few questions first. <Nerves kick in>

"Name a Canadian movie actor." Lisa and Alex aced that one with about a dozen rapid-fire answers. They got their passports stamped.

"Name a Canadian singer."  Katie shouted out 'Justin Beiber' to which the agent replied, "He doesn't count." (smile)  Katie's passport got stamped. Jerry answered with something more acceptable and got his stamp.

Leaving me at the mercy of the Canadian government to get a passport stamp and permission to leave the country. I was able to ingratiate myself somewhat by offering a couple of suggestions for her upcoming visit to Los Angeles for the CHIPs-TV show fan club convention.  So despite my lack of Cannuck knowledge, I thought I was making some progress. But then it was back to business.

"Name a Canadian invention," she snapped.  Uhhh...  She pointed to my jacket. "A zipper?" I asked hesitantly.  "Yes, they were invented in Canada."   And that's how I got my passport stamp.
