The Sacramento Bee and the library sponsored an evening lecture with one of Katie's favorite authors, Ridley Pearson. We arrived early and the room was virtually empty so Katie got to spend quite a bit of time talking with him about his books. He was very nice and encouraged her to keep writing.

We knew of him from the Kingdom Keepers (Disney) series and Peter and the Starcatchers (which has just been made into a Broadway play), but didn't realize he also writes thrillers and fiction for older audiences. He explained to Katie his elaborate and lengthy research and writing process for both types of books, and how he often writes and re-writes the drafts dozens of times before they are finalized.

One of the coolest things he told us is that while working on the Kingdom Keepers books, he has full access to Walt Disney World, 24 hours a day. On several occasions, he's gone in the middle of the night and had the staff turn on rides. Then, he rides them all alone, over and over again to make sure he's getting all the details right.

He also told us that he's about one page away from finishing the sixth Kingdom Keepers book.
