It was supposed to be a quiet dinner for two to celebrate our 17th anniversary. But five minutes after we were seated at the Riverside Clubhouse, a couple was seated at the table next to us. I didn't recognize them, but Joe did. It was Joe's boss and his wife (who had also left three kids at home for a long overdue night out alone).

We all quickly switched into the 'impress the co-worker' mode. Prawns for appetizers instead of the gourmet French fries we really wanted. Good red wine instead of the cheaper stuff. All smiles, all the time. You want witty conservation? No problem. And just enough name dropping to be impressive without being gauche (we hope).

Truth be told, the evening was a lot more fun than it probably would have been otherwise. Not only that, we can cross anniversary dinner AND dinner with the boss off the 'to do' list...
