Russian River and Sacramento, California
May 6-7, 2023
I'm in
Northern California for the week, housesitting for Danny, Emi and Maya
while they are in Japan. So it made sense to spend a day over on the
Russian River opening the cabin for the season and seeing the folks. On
Sunday, I was invited to Abby's minecraft- themed birthday at Southside
Park. And although I lived in Sacramento for more than 30 years, I learned something new. The cute names of the 21 alleys in downtown are part of a sequential addressing system. Each name begins with the letter of the street to its north and represent Sacramento's history and qualities. For example, Tomato Alley - near where I parked today - is just below T Street and named after Sacramento’s most recognized agricultural product. Nearby Solons Alley refers to the city’s old minor league baseball team, and Liestal Alley is named after Sacramento's sister city in Switzerland. "Alleys have a negative connotation, so we’ve taken a negative and turned it into a positive, said a city official.” |
