When we went to the vet yesterday, I was certain we'd find out Riley's issue was poor dental care or, at worst, an infected tooth that needed to be pulled. But the minute the vet looked in her mouth, there was a look of dread as she told us about the tumor and the poor prognosis.

We brought our baby girl home, hoping that there would be many more days, even weeks. But by this morning, we knew what needed to be done to relieve her from the pain.

We cuddled and stroked her coat until the end. She purred and did her classic head butt a few times. And then we said goodbye.

She lived with us for about 13 years after we rescued her from the animal shelter in Sacramento. At the time, the staffer said black cats were the hardest to find homes from - but I knew from the minute I saw her that she was ours. She hit the jackpot with us, and we did with her. She'll always be a part of us.
