Green Bay, Wisconsin
July 30, 2022
I don't think I fully appreciated the fandom of the Green Bay Packers
until we spent a bit of time driving around Lambeau Field and the adjacent
neighborhood. The Packers are America’s last small-town professional team and the NFL’s only publicly- owned franchise, and clearly the residents of Green Bay see this team as theirs. Even though there wasn't a game today, the parking lots were partly filled and hundreds of fans mingled around, waiting to get a glimpse of the players after they finished a workout. Okay, I get that. But then we drove around the nearby neighborhoods. Sure, there were plenty of Green Bay-themed mailboxes and banners. But the street facing the stadium took it to another level. Massive posters on fences, statues, backyards designed to look like football fields, a house that was remodeled in the style of Lambeau Field, and even a cheesehead on the dinosaur at the gas station. |
