Quebec City, Canada
September 1, 2019
What we learned from our tour guide this morning. - Be glad you are visiting in September. The winters are brutal -- a theme that was repeated many times over the course of two hours. - The Upper and Lower towns have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. (How many US cities have been so designated? None, our toured guide chuckled...) - Quebec is the only walled city north of Mexico City. And you never know when you are going to see parts of the stone wall. We saw sections inside hotels, churches, parks, shops. Even in the basement of a furrier. - There's a huge labor shortage in Quebec. People wait months for a plumber or to have their snow tires removed. - Chateau Frontenac is supposedly the world’s most photographed hotel. It's entrance is hidden on the side, and yes, there is a Starbucks near the entrance. - Hot maple syrup poured over ice is delicious. Video - Many movies and TV shows are filmed here because of the European look. I recognized the church (supposedly in France) from Catch Me if you Can. - When Paul McCartney comes to the city he's not bothered by fans. (Still find that one hard to believe.) And after the tour at lunch, I discovered one more fun fact: Poutine is gross. |
