Sacramento and Anaheim, California

A few days after a procedure to clear some clouding off the lens in my
left eye, I started seeing little brown lines. And soon discovered that
I had a macular hole. The doctors told me I would need surgery to correct it and restore my vision. Followed by 1-2 weeks of laying 'face down' with a gas bubble in the eye and then about 12 weeks of recovery and no flying. Yikes... Once back in Southern California I found an ophthalmologist who has had some luck doing a modified version of the surgery, without the face down requirement and a faster recovery. A week later, I was in the hospital for the procedure, followed by about 10 days of taking it easy at home. To speed the recovery, I did get a shot of steroids in my eye (yes, it's as horrible as it sounds). But on the third post-op visit, we got the results we were looking for and the healing had begun. "How exactly did I get that hole," I asked the doctor. "Was it the years of wearing contacts, or the cataract or..?" Nope. "Just getting old," he told me. |
